About

My Australia project

MY Australia is the first longitudinal, nation-wide study of Australia’s multicultural youth. It presents regular status reports on refugee and migrant youth, and data on key cultural, economic and social indicators.

Australia’s young people today are more mobile and culturally diverse than ever before. While this brings many advantages, multicultural young people face challenges that are not well understood by the community or government – such as discrimination, intergenerational conflict and economic insecurity.

Quantitative and qualitative data from the MY Australia project will be used to develop an annual report on the status of multicultural youth in Australia.

This vital research will be used to help policymakers and organisations who work with young, diverse people to develop better policies and programs, enrich the lives of multicultural youth and contribute to the social cohesion of Australian society.

The project was a collaboration between the following organisations:

  • The University of Melbourne
  • Centre for Multicultural Youth
  • Access Community Services Ltd
  • Multicultural Youth Affairs Network of NSW
  • Department of Education and Training
  • Migrant Resource Centre (Southern Tasmania Inc)
  • Youth Coalition of the ACT
  • Multicultural Youth South Australia Inc
  • Youth Affairs Council of WA Inc
  • Office of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship.

Multicultural Youth Australia Knowledge Hub

The Multicultural Youth Australia Knowledge Hub is a curated repository of data on refugee and migrant young people, and the main access point for data from the Multicultural Youth Australia project. It brings together up-to-date research and reporting undertaken by universities, governments, NGOs and community organisations, and provides a 'one-stop shop' for organisations looking for national and global data about multicultural youth.

The Multicultural Youth Australia Knowledge Hub website was developed by researchers from the University of Melbourne's Youth Research Centre, Research Unit in Public Cultures, and eScholarship Research Centre as part of the Australian Research Council funded project 'Defining the Status of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Young People' (LP150100219 2016-2018). It was first published in 2018 by the eScholarship Research Centre on behalf of the Multicultural Australia Project.

The research team includes Dr Rimi Khan, Dr Babak Dadvand and Dr Jessica Crofts who wrote the entries; data modelling, curation and web design implementation was undertaken by Gavan McCarthy and Rachel Tropea; and graphic design by Brad Healy. The data was modelled and curated using the Online Heritage Resource Manager.
