Summary

This question highlights 17 issues and asks participants to indicate their level of concern about each issue. The purpose was to identify the most urgent issues of personal concern for multicultural youth. The data also allowed comparison with the wider population of Australian young people.

Details

Response Options: The issues listed for this question consisted of: alcohol, bullying/emotional abuse, body image, coping with stress, depression, discrimination, drugs, family conflict, gambling, personal safety, school or study problems, suicide, homelessness, domestic violence, sexual health (STIs, pregnancy), physical health, and anxiety. Each issue was followed by a scale consisting of 5 response options including: extremely concerned, very concerned, somewhat concerned, slightly concerned, and not at all.

Response: 1,896 respondents answered the questions in this section of the Census.

Results: The notable difference between the multicultural sample and the general youth sample relates to 'discrimination'. Discrimination ranked as the second most important issue of personal concern for refugee and migrant young people. Among the Mission Australia (2017) sample it was the ninth most important issue. Apart from this difference, the level of concern for various issues were similar for multicultural young people and the Mission Australia sample. The 3 issues of greatest personal concern for the Mission Australia (2017) sample were: stress (20.4% 'extremely concerned'), school or study problems (14.3%), and body image (13.1%).
