This question probed further into friendship networks and asked the participants about how they made their friends.

Details

Response Options: The participants could choose as many options as applied to them from a list of 11 response options. The response options included: 1) school or educational institution, 2) through other friends, 3) in your neighbourhood, 4) ethnic/cultural activities or groups, 5) youth groups, 6) religious groups or activities, 7) online, 8) through hobbies or activities (for example at a concert, playing music, making art), 9) sporting groups, 10) work, and 11) travel. There was also a 'other (please specify)' option to allow answers beyond the available response options.

Response: 1,766 respondents answered this question.

Results: Multicultural young people made friends through a range of spaces and networks. Organised and institutional spaces for young people, such as education or community-based groups, were especially important. At least 1 in 5 also indicated that they made their friends through youth groups (27.5%), ethnic/cultural activities or groups (26.7%), religious groups or activities (26.3%), and in their neighbourhoods (25.4%).
