Details
Response Options: The response options included: 1) to make a lot of money, 2) to live up to religious or spiritual ideals, 3) to pursue a life of pleasure, 4) to have a special relationship with someone, 5) to be active in working for a better society, 6) to have children, and 7) to have a job I'm passionate about. The participants indicated their responses on a continuum that consisted of low importance, medium importance, high importance and very high importance.
Response: 1,693 respondents answered this question.
Results: The sample had a strong civic outlook; they sought fulfilment through work and contributing to social change. More individualistic goals - such as pleasure and money - were deemed less important. While multicultural young people are concerned with making a contribution to society, this does not seem to be strongly tied to religious or spiritual ideals. And while they are interested in having a special relationship with someone, this is not motivated by a desire to start a family at this stage in their lives.
