Description: Typed excerpt of a letter written by Dr Dorothy Howard to an unknown recipient, presumably a staff member of a South Australian school. On the basis on information provided by A. G. Paull, the assistant of South Australia's Director of Education Mr Mander-Jones, Dr Howard writes to enquire about the play traditions of Aboriginal children. She asks if the Aboriginal students play string games, draw sand drawings or play with leaves, sticks or stones in set patterns and symbols. Dr Howard writes that anthropologist Charles Mountford has assisted with her study of Aboriginal children's games and she is eager to learn of similar investigations. One of a collection of letters written to and from children's Folklorist Dr Dorothy Howard between 1954 and 1995. Dr Howard came to Australia in 1954-55 as an American Fulbright scholar to study Australian children's folklore. She travelled across Australia for 10 months collecting children's playground rhymes, games, play artefacts, etc. The original fieldwork she collected during this period is held in the Australian Children's Folklore Collection (ACFC) at Museum Victoria and includes index cards, letters and photographs.
