Summary

This question examines the social, political and cultural participation among multicultural youth. It asks the participants to identify the activities and/or groups in which they have been involved in the previous year. Participation is a key barometer of multicultural young people's social, economic and cultural status.

Response Options: The response options included: 1) arts/cultural/music activities, 2) environmental group/activity, 3) political groups/organisations, 4) sports (as a participant), 5) sports (as a spectator), 6) religious or cultural activities (e.g. community celebrations, events, groups etc.), 7) youth leadership initiatives (e.g. youth councils, youth reference groups, youth-led groups or organisations etc.), 8) student leadership activities, 9) volunteer work, 10) youth groups and clubs, and 11) none of the above. There was also a 'other (please specify)' option to allow answers beyond the available response options.

Response: 1,504 respondents answered this question.

Results: The findings show that many of the young people were involved in various kinds of civic and group activity as a platform for political expression and engagement. Much of this activity was undertaken on a volunteer basis.
