Summary

This question examines the formal and informal modes of citizenship participation among multicultural youth. It asks participants to indicate whether they have engaged in different forms of social and political participation within the previous year.

Response Options: The participants could choose as many response options as relevant to their citizenship participation from a list of six including: 1) contacted a politician about an issue you care about, 2) signed a petition or an online campaign, 3) thought ethically about what products you buy (e.g. buying fair trade coffee), 4) expressed an opinion on social media about an issue you care about, 5) attended a protest or demonstration, and 6) none of the above. There was also a 'other (please specify)' option to allow answers beyond the available response options.

Response: 1,450 respondents answered this question.

Results: The findings show that multicultural young people have strong levels of civic and political engagement. About three-quarters of the sample had participated in one or more of the following activities in the last 12 months: 31.7% signed a petition or an online campaign, 27.5% expressed an opinion on social media about an issue they cared about, and 23.7% thought ethically about products they buy.
