Summary

Social media is an important platform for multicultural young people to participate in cultural activity and build creative networks. Rather than cutting them off from the 'real-world', young people's social media activity extends their 'real-world' networks and helps to facilitate a range of social and creative pursuits. This question addresses online participation and asks the respondents to identify the reasons for which they use social media.

Response Options: The response options included: 1) keep in contact with family/friends, 2) to make new friends, 3) for dating, 4) to keep informed about social or political issues, 5) to inform others about social or political issues, 6) to post/share photos, 7) to be involved in creative networks (e.g. Soundcloud, Tumblr, YouTube), and 8) to hear about local events. There was also a 'other (please specify)' option to allow answers beyond the available response options.

Response: 1,482 respondents answered this question.

Results: Almost half of the sample (44.2%) stated that they used social media to post/share photos while almost one-third (29.6%) used social media sites such as Soundcloud, Tumblr or YouTube to participate in creative networks. Social media was also an important way for most young people to hear about local events (39.4% used social media for this purpose).
