Description | Series 6 contains assorted visual and technical records in relation to the work of the United Nations Special Commission and the UN in Iran and Iraq, with a focus on the period 1991-1992. There are many records of and about UNSCOM's activities at the Muthanna State Establishment near Baghdad, in particular the June 1991 inspection of the Iraqi chemical weapons facility. Other records of note in this series include a master set of Peter Dunn’s viewfoils (transparencies used in presentations) from the years 1988, 1991 and 1996. Series 6 also includes many reports in the media and other public forums documenting or relevant to the work carried out by UNSCOM, and more generally about developments around chemical warfare and chemical weapons. Records include publications, copies of talks, papers and presentations (many of which include visual records such as transparencies and photographs), and also a radio interview with Peter Dunn from 1992, entitled ‘Einstein or Go Go’ |

Includes images of: - Second United Nations' mission to Iran, 25 February to 6 March 1986. - Labbafi-Nejad Medical Centre in Tehran (numbers wounded, dead, etc). - Poster in Arabic and English regarding an attack in which chemical weapons were used by Iraq upon Iran, 11 April 1987. For preservation purposes, each transparency was removed from the plastic sleeve in which it was originally housed, and placed in an archival safe sleeve behind the original sleeve. Many of the original sleeves feature M.R.L. Scientific Photography numbers and/or other file references. This item was originally included in a box containing Inventory Items DUNN00362 - DUNN00363. For preservation reasons the material was divided into two part files during processing.

The introduction to this report refers to the recovery of rockets from the Khorramshahr area during the United Nations' inspection in Iran, as documented in the United Nations' report S/18852. The technical report provides information about one type of rocket additional to that given in the United Nations' report. Contains three-page press release, plus attached news release issued by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade entitled "Australians among experts verifying Iraq's Chemical Weapons" and dated 13 June 1991. Two copies, all remaining duplicates have been discarded. Also contains a letter from D. Pearson, Lieutenant Colonel for General Officer Commanding, Australian Army, to W. Connick, Director, Materials Research Laboratory, dated 9 August 1991. Letter requests permission for Peter Dunn to deliver a presentation on the chemical warfare aspects of the Middle East conflict to officers of Headquarters Logistic Command. Approval of this request, along with precis of lecture, abstract of Peter Dunn's lecture and other information feature on an attached item of correspondence, which is printed on the letterhead of the DSTO [Defence, Science and Technology Organisation] - Materials Research Laboratory. For preservation reasons, the records listed above have been removed from the uninscribed manila folder in which they were originally housed.

For preservation reasons, this news clipping was removed from the envelope in which it was originally housed, which is inscribed "Newspaper [Article] - London". - Other news clippings (photocopies) to do with Iraqi chemical weapons, British chemical and nuclear exports to Iraq, UNSCOM [United Nations Special Commission] inspections of stockpiled weapons, and the Gulf War, published in the Independent and the Age newspapers in August 1991. - Correspondence to do with publication of a photograph depicting United Nations' officials inspecting chemical bombs in Iraq, in the September 1991 issue of Chemistry in Australia. For preservation reasons, during processing the papers in this inventory item were removed from the uninscribed folder in which they were originally housed.

Twenty-eight colour transparencies (viewfoils), originally enclosed in plastic sleeves. Each sleeve is inscribed with a unique Materials Research Laboratory photographic reference codes. Transparencies depict chemical weapons facilities including Samarra Chemical Weapons Research, Production and Storage Facility, as well as missiles, equipment and inspection personnel in Iraq. Photographic codes are as follows: File no 2146 - #8, 13 [two copies], 13A, 22, 23, 25, 33, 35. File no 2147 - #4, 17, 22, 34, 35. File no 2148 - #11, 14, 32. File no 2149 - #13, 16, 18, 31. File no 17349A - #4, 9A, 15, 20A. File no 17349 - frame 9, 14. The transparencies listed above were originally housed in an uninscribed manila folder. For preservation purposes, during processing the transparencies were removed from their original housing. Each one was placed in an archival enclosure behind its original sleeve.

Contains fourteen transparencies (viewfoils) of the Muthanna State Establishment in Iraq. Transparencies were originally enclosed behind plastic sleeves. Some sleeves feature unique photographic file references, including the following Materials Research Laboratory codes: 2146 #22; 2148 #14; 2147 #35; 17349A #4; 17349 #14. Also contains two lists of viewfoils supplied by Peter Dunn, dated November 1992, and an item of correspondence in relation to 'vufoils' received by Colin R. Evans. Letter is dated 8 October 1991. The contents of this inventory item were originally part of a set of records, including a map of Baghdad and other papers, housed in an uninscribed Kodak box. For preservation purposes, during processing they were removed from the box and subdivided into two part files. For Part 2 of this file, see Inventory Item DUNN00806. The transparencies were rehoused in archival sleeves behind their original sleeves, together with the accompanying paper-based documentation. The Kodak box was discarded.
