The main focus of this series is the United Nations' investigations into the use of chemical weapons in Iran and Iraq in the 1980s, and in particular Peter Dunn’s involvement as an inspector working on behalf of the UN during these investigations. The majority of records in this series are from the period 1986 to 1988. The records in this series were housed in a drawer of one of Peter Dunn's filing cabinets.

Record formats include photographs, maps, transparencies, reports and other documents. Representative content includes: copies of official reports to the United Nations and Australian Defence Department regarding the use of chemical weapons in Iran and Iraq; media accounts from Australian, Iranian and Iraqi newspapers; and Peter Dunn’s own personal accounts of the UN missions and associated matters.

Photographs are glued to A4 sheets, with typed captions. Each sheet is numbered and many are missing their photographs. - Notes on 'Tetrafluoroethylene-Ethylene Copolymers (ETFE), affixed with sticky tape to a sheet of writing paper.
- Letter to Mr John Roseblade from R.C. Chenhall General Manager UNASCO [Australian manufacturer of plastics] pty [proprietary] ltd [limited] dated 24/6/87 [1987] regarding the provision of four samples of Valve Seat.
- Tefzel Fluoropolymer Design Handbook, Du Pont, dated 1973. Includes six sheets (three illustrations/captions, three graphs with handwritten annotations) loose inside booklet. The graphs were rehoused in archival sleeves at the time of processing for preservation purposes.

Soft-bound volumes. Includes copy of report together with an MRL Minute Paper, dated 3 June 1987 and signed by Peter Dunn, originally housed in a plastic sleeve. For preservation purposes, the papers were rehoused in an archival sleeve at the time of processing. The original plastic sleeve was discarded.

- S/18852 'Report Of The Mission Dispatched By The Secretary-General To Investigate Allegations Of The Use Of Chemical Weapons In The Conflict Between The Islamic Republic Of Iran And Iraq'. Two copies in English, and one copy each in French, Russian, Arabic, Chinese and Spanish.
- S/18852/Add.1 'Addendum - Appendix III - Summary Report on Patients examined by the Medical Specialist (Dr Manuel Dominguez) with Relevant Clinical Data'. Two copies.
- Cover letter from Gustav Andersson, Manuel Dominquez, Peter Dunn, and Colonel Ulrich Imobersteg to Secretary-General of the United Nations, as sent with their report of the 1987 UN Missions to Iran and Iraq. Dated 6 May 1987. Annotated photocopy. Also an attached sheet outlining seven unanimous conclusions drawn by the authors based upon their recent investigations.
- A second cover letter from Gustav Andersson, Peter Dunn, Manuel Dominquez and Colonel Ulrich Imobersteg to Javier Pérez de Cuéllar, Secretary-General, United Nations, also dated 6 May 1987. In this letter the authors report on casualties they had observed during the UN Missions which had involved the use of mustard gas against Iraqi Kurds. The authors state that due to the political sensitivity of this matter, they were advising him of this aspect of their investigations separately to the main report. Letter consists of an annotated photocopy, stamped 'strictly confidential'. Letter is filed together with a copy of the cover letter described above, and an annotated draft version of the report itself. This set of papers was originally held together with a bulldog clip. For preservation purposes, they were were rehoused in an archival sleeve at the time of processing.
- Official MRL Minute Paper and cover sheet, as used in distribution of the report listed above.

The records listed above were originally housed in a yellow envelope inscribed '1987 UN [United Nations] Mission to Iran & Iraq. Master copy of the report (2) Plus foreign language copies (4)’. For preservation purposes, they were removed from the envelope during processing. The inscription from the original envelope has been retained in this inventory item.

Contains 16 transparencies for presentation/s. One slide features the following title: 'The Chemical War Between Iran And Iraq - by Peter Dunn - Materials Research Laboratories - Defence Science And Technology Organisation.'

Each transparency is housed in a plastic sleeve, some of which are numbered with pencil in the top right hand corners. The numbers include: 3, 2, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15. None of the transparencies are dated.

Transparencies were originally housed in an uninscribed manila folder. For preservation purposes, during processing they were removed from the folder, which was discarded. Each transparency was rehoused in an archival sleeve, behind its original sleeve.
