Description

This series contains loose photographs, slides, photograph albums, transparencies, audio and video cassettes, and occasional correspondence or other notes relating to Peter Dunn's work as a defence scientist and United Nations chemical weapons inspector and UNSCOM commissioner.

The series mostly consists of documentary, interview and presentation materials featuring or created by Peter Dunn in the course of his professional work. Some external reference materials are also included, in particular among the video items - these include a number of recordings of television programs relating to chemical warfare as broadcast on news and current affairs programs in Australia, Britain and Iran.

Records in relation to an MRL presentation about chemical warfare and chemical weapon systems, with many photographs pertaining to Iran and/or Iraq. Records consist of 33 transparencies of photographs, diagrams and presentation slides, plus typed and handwritten lists of viewfoils, a handwritten note regarding the return of a group of overhead slides, and photocopies of viewfoils.

Each transparency was originally housed behind a plastic sleeve. Some sleeves are inscribed with unique Materials Research Laboratory photographic codes, and some also feature other numeric references and captions. For preservation purposes, during processing each transparency was rehoused in an archival sleeve behind its original sleeve.

Audio recording of 3CR radio interview with Dr Peter Dunn, originally broadcast 11 February 1993. Duration: 16 minutes, 14 seconds.

The topic of the interview is chemical weapons, and in particular the United Nations Chemical Weapons Convention (also known as the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction), signed on the 13 January 1993. As well, the interview deals with Peter Dunn's personal observations and experiences as a United Nations chemical weapons inspector during the Iran-Iraq war and subsequent to the conflict.

The recording was transferred from audio tape to CD in 2012 by a private company by arrangement of Roma Dunn. One copy has a post-it note attached (written by Roma Dunn): "Interview - Dr P. Dunn "Lost in Science" 3CR 11 Feb. 1993. 16.14 mins." The other copy has an adhesive label (also in Roma Dunn's hand) affixed to the case: "Interview with Dr P. Dunn Lost in Science / 3CR 11/2/93".

Interview conducted by George Negus and broadcast as part of the "Today" program on the Channel Nine network. Duration: 4 minutes, 53 seconds. Includes images that may cause distress.

The primary topic of discussion is chemical warfare, and more specifically Peter Dunn's observations and experiences as a chemical weapons inspector during United Nations missions carried out in Iran and Iraq in the years 1984, 1986, and 1987.
